Rockville, MD – A coalition of agricultural and forest product hauling interests has formed a steering committee and developed an aggressive 2009 work plan to press the need for Gross Vehicle Weight limit reform on federal highways as Congress drafts a new highway bill early next year.

The Agricultural Transportation Efficiency Coalition (AgTEC) supports increasing the overall gross vehicle weight limits to enable transporters of raw agricultural products, forest products, and animal feed to move these essential commodities from point-of-origin to processing facilities in a fuel-efficient manner.

AgTEC’s new steering committee, chaired by Mike Branch of Smurfit-Stone Container, is comprised of Vice Chair Bud Wallace of Wallace Transport, Dennis Berryhill of Fleetwood Transport Service, Jeff Doran of the Florida Forestry Association, Suzanne Madden of the American Forest & Paper Association, and Al Eiden of CHS, Inc. Steve Jarvis of the Forest Resources Association will provide staff support.

"Our country's forest and farm products are the basis of manufacturing industries and most crucial to our country’s prosperity,” stated Branch. “AgTEC will make the case that by improving our road system's ability to move these basic commodities more efficiently, we will conserve fuel, improve safety, reduce emissions, and will prevent the loss of more U.S. jobs to other countries. The 2009 Highway Reauthorization Bill must address this critical need."

The Mission of the Agricultural Transportation Efficiency Coalition is to improve the efficiency of transporting raw, unprocessed agricultural and forest products from farms and forests to processing facilities.
