Rockville, MD – The Forest Resources Association, working with allied organizations, has released three new video-based logging safety training programs, presenting principles and pointers on best practices for avoiding risks associated with skidding, log loading, and log truck load securement.

All three projects, consisting of a DVD and Leader’s Guide booklet, received financial support from the Timber Harvesting & Transportation Safety Foundation.

The 15-minute Log Loader Safety Video for Log Truck Operators (08-A-7) provides basic information about truck-mounted log loader operation and maintenance, covering broad situations that could be potentially hazardous or cause injury, either to the operator or to personnel on the ground. Designed for presentation in a facilitated session, the training program should run 45 minutes to an hour. FRA worked with the Forest Industry Safety and Training Alliance, with assistance from many cooperators, to produce the DVD and Guide.

The 13-minute Load Securement for Logs: Tree Length and Cut Up Wood Video (08-A-5), produced by the North Carolina Forestry Association, reviews federal requirements for straps and chains on treelength or double-bunk wood. It covers walk-around truck/trailer inspection, securement guidelines, and details on working load limits for securement devices. Directed to truck drivers, loggers, and woodyard personnel, the DVD + Guide is designed for use in a one-hour facilitated training session or as a stand-alone self-instruction module.

The 19-minute Skidder Safety and Efficiency Video (08-A-4), produced by Virginia Cooperative Extension, can help a logger or facilitator lead a one-hour workshop for skidder operators and ground personnel to improve implementation of safety routines, maintenance measures, and overall efficiency while on or near a skidder.

  • Log Loader Safety Video for Log Truck Operators (08-A-7) is available for $50 to FRA members ($100 to others).

  • Load Securement for Logs: Tree Length and Cut Up Wood Video (08-A-5) is available for $40 to FRA members ($80 to others).
