Rockville, MD – The Forest Resources Association has developed a Northern Forestry Aesthetics Workshop, in the form of a facilitated PowerPoint presentation, directed to forestry and logging personnel. The CD-based Workshop presents principles for improving the visual impact of forest operations in Northern settings.

Designed for a non-expert discussion leader to present in an interactive setting, the 69-slide presentation provides material for a full-day Workshop. A ten-page Discussion Leader’s Guide, with tips and points to cue the facilitator through the session, is included along with the PowerPoint CD.

FRA President Richard Lewis noted that FRA’s Forestry Aesthetics Video, released in 1999, is a persistently popular training piece but that its details and examples are directed mostly to Southern situations. “The basic principles are the same,” comments Lewis. “Planning tree harvesting with sensitivity to visual impact, whether in road layout or design of cutting blocks, can make a difference in retaining our social license to harvest timber and pulpwood. Our Lake States Region has developed a fine set of materials to adapt those principles.”

The Workshop introduces and defines forestry aesthetics, then moves into modules on planning, roads, landings, skid trails, and discussion of specific visual quality points. The Guide also provides recommendations on Workshop logistics and set-up.

FRA members may order the CD and Guide at $50 per set, domestic shipping included; the price is $100 per set for non-members. Please enclose payment with order, checks payable to “FRA”; charge orders may be faxed to 301/838-9481. Direct orders to Forest Resources Association Inc., 600 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 350, Rockville, MD 20852, and refer to stock number 08-A-1.
