Rockville, MD – The Forest Resources
Association conferred its 2009 Technical Writing Award on Franklin Bolton,
co-owner of B&B Companies of North Carolina, at FRA’s March 16 Annual
Awards Luncheon in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Bolton authored the finest
Technical Release FRA published during the previous year.
Bolton’s Technical Release, Truck and Trailer Weight Reduction Revisited,
describes how his logging company has eliminated excess weight from its
trucks, log trailers, and chip vans to boost payloads.
Bolton says that these weight reduction strategies have reduced the tare
weight of its truck-trailer combination vehicles by 4,000 to 7,000 pounds.
Some of the strategies include using super-single tires and rims,
lighter-weight trailers and landing gear, and lighter-weight engines, as
well as only carrying enough fuel to make the wood deliveries before
returning to B&B Companies’ refueling tank. These changes realize cost
savings through better fuel efficiency and higher payloads.
Single copies of the winning publication are available at no charge from
FRA at 301/838-9385. Requests should refer to stock number 07-R-29.
