Rockville, MD — The North Carolina Association of Professional Loggers, working with Forestry Mutual Insurance Company, has produced a 20-minute Storm Damage and Salvage Safety Video, along with a Discussion Leader's Guide, as materials to educate trained forest workers in the special hazards of salvage logging. The training program directs itself to utility crews and emergency management crews, as well as to conventional logging personnel.

The Forest Resources Association distributes the Video, in DVD format, nationwide.

"This training program can help managers and crew members assess and respond to the special risks of storm restoration and salvage operations," commented FRA's Lake States Region Manager, Vickie Hoffart, who serves as FRA's staff liaison for the Timber Harvesting and Transportation Safety Foundation, which supported the Video's production. "This training program provides a framework for evaluating the risk factors in a storm-throw situation and then addressing them systematically."

The Video presents a five-part plan for evaluating a hazard area, introduces four specialized cutting techniques to deal with wood under tension, and addresses issues associated with uprooted trees and root ball clumps.

In addition to THATS, the producers thank the NC AgroMedicine Institute, Cobbler Logging, Ricky Brewer Logging, and Virginia Carolina Timber for their collaboration.

FRA members may order the Storm Damage and Salvage Safety Video (DVD format) and Guide at $50 apiece, or $100 apiece for non-members.
