SPEAKING TO THE PUBLIC

Take advantage of speaking opportunities
"The World Is Run by Those Who Speak Out!" Pro-forestry activists soon discover that there are many opportunities to speak to community groups. There are all sorts of organizations with monthly meetings that require a speaker. You'll be surprised to find how willing these groups will be to let you speak at their meeting.

If you are a logger, remember that even people who live in small towns are often unaware of what you do and the problems you face as a small business operating in the local area. Ask for the opportunity to tell them what you do. If you can show some slides or video of your operation, do it. Remember, the average person probably only sees your log or chip trucks on the road. The average person does not visit your job.

Foresters are often stereotyped as to what they do. You might start out asking your audience what they think you do, then fill them in. Foresters for large companies can often become a "human scale face" for what may be perceived as a large, distant corporation.

We encourage you to commit to making at least two talks per year. Once you've made one presentation you will see how easy it is and you will not fear seeking other speaking opportunities. Also, remember that some of your speaking might be to other loggers or foresters in your own industry. They may also need to be motivated and called to action.
