JERRY KLEMM

I have worked as a welder for Potlatch Corporation's Lewiston, Idaho paper mill since 1961. For more than a decade, I've worked to get hourly workers interested in forestry-related issues such as endangered species, water quality, and federal policies that impact timber supply. Having labor's voice heard on these issues, that's what I stand for.

My proudest moment came with the creation of the Pulp and Paperworkers' Resource Council in 1991. This organization represents 400,000 union members nationwide and calls members into action on natural resource issues. I was PPRC's National Chairman for three years, and I've chaired its Rocky Mountain Region.

I have worked in many forums to get the word out about sustainable forest management-from classrooms to town meetings to woods tours to rallies to direct contacts with public officials. Activists must take our message to the people and their leaders in ways that make a difference for all of us. We must educate ourselves, know where we stand, and work with others for what we believe.
